- Autumn Ramsey
PAUL SOTO is pleased to present an exhibition by Autumn Ramsey. This will be Ramsey’s fourth monographic exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition will open on Saturday, June 11 with a public reception from 5 to 7pm, and it will run at the gallery through the summer until July 23.
Autumn Ramsey’s work has consistently built upon a cultural inclination in Western history that the body, especially the female body, is a part of the physical world that is not entirely rational, and something that needs to be controlled. Her recent paintings address this tendency afresh, treating the female body, and by inference our communal body, as manifest in a series of archetypal garden paintings. Here the abundance, irrationality, and pleasures of experience embrace the sensibility of a natural field in perpetual flux. Ramsey grounds her work by returning to the narratives of mythology. But rather than explain or decode the metaphor, she preferences style as primarily understood through the senses, creating paintings that are approachable. The works are left open for viewers to engage the references as they desire, from remaining in the painterly flourishes of the surface, to delving into the countless strings of relationships and interpretations of beauty and self-examination the artist references.
